Now that we are all spending lots and lots of time at home – and it is probably much needed even though the circumstances are not ideal – I’ve been exploring ways to enjoy my sacred space, cozy up and get some hygge in my life. Hygge loosely translates to #cozycontentment and savoring the simple pleasures in life.
I learned this word around the Christmas holidays a year ago and it is one of my favorite words. If you haven’t heard it, it’s Danish and it’s pronounced “hoo-ga”. It doesn’t translate into one word in particular in English, but since I learned it in December, I see and hear it and think “comfort and joy” because I adore Christmas carols! Here’s what I’ve been intentionally enjoying lately…
· A cup of tea in an actual mug that isn’t stainless steel – when we’re hustling and bustling about, most of us usually grab our cup of caffeine to go or have our travel cups. Now, we can enjoy our coffee or tea in the comfort of our own homes using those adorable mugs you were so excited about buying.
· A glass (or bottle - you're at home!) of wine, a bowl of popcorn, and binging a favorite old television show.
· If it’s cold (almost never in Texas… #lèsigh) – cuddle up on your sofa with your favorite person or your pet!
· Literally anything that gives you that feeling of comfort and contentment.
Self-care is always important. It is even more important given our current situation.
So be kind to yourself; be kind to others; and hang in there!
