So, there are a few things I've jotted down in the last few months that never got published.
Here's what's been on my mind...
Work Wear – flip flops are for the beach!
So, I really need to get something off of my chest officially…
We have all gotten way to comfortable with the way we choose to dress. Your attire is a direct representation of who you are and how you want to be perceived in public. When you are going to work, running your own business, or representing yourself as a brand, how you look and communicate is very important to your success.
That being said - I AM SO OVER FLIP FLOPS!!! Don’t get me wrong, they are perfect for poolside and the beach (even though I bought a pair of rubber Birkenstocks for poolside because, well, see first sentence I this paragraph!). I completely lost it at the start of the summer when I had to actually go inside a bank to handle some business and one of the “bankers” had on flip flops. They were not cute thong style sandals – even though to me, that is still just a fancy flip flop – they were tacky, rubber, dollar store flip flops. I seriously considered closing my account there because of it!
Ladies – seriously – those cheap dollar store flip flops are for the beach, pool, and public showers. That’s all! The fancy flip flops are for casual outings, Saturdays, and Sunday Funday – period! NEVER for work!!! Buy some ballerina slippers – actual shoes with soles – for work if you don’t want to wear heels all the time! Even a pair of Tom’s is a better choice than a flip flop! We must do better!
Whew! That felt really good to put out there! If you're a flip flop person, then by all means, do you! Just know I am judging and side eyeing you... #sorrynotsorry
Fashion Literature
One of my favorite pastime is reading so a good book about fashion always excites me. I read two recently that I never shared here…
Women in Clothes by Sheila Heti, Heidi Julavits and Leanne Shapton
I love to read but I will admit that I would much rather read fiction than non-fiction. However, after attending an event featuring these authors and their new book, I was intrigued and excited about reading what sounded to be a great labor of love for these ladies.
Women in Clothes is a collection of essays based on 50 questions that the authors came up with and asked several ladies all in different stages and walks of life. Our clothing choices – especially those we make as women – are deeply attached to our feelings, past experiences, and influences and I love the idea of answering such soul-searching questions. It helps us gain insight into our own psyches and thought processes as well as better understand others and how they think.
That being said, I had to give myself permission to not finish this book – and I always make myself finish a book. It started out as a transcript of the conversations and emails of the 3 authors which was, at first, interesting because it enables the ready to get a feel for each lady’s personal voice. Over time, though, the narratives became difficult to follow because of the transcripted text as well as the lack of organization of ideas. I finally decided to just find the questions because I really wanted to read and answer them myself hoping to gain greater insight about me and how I have been influenced. The questions were hard to find and when I found them, they were in one big, confusing paragraph. I am hoping this has something to do with me having a digital copy and that the print edition is better organized.
At any rate, I love the idea of this book but I could not complete it because the ideas seemed really scattered and I had a hard time following the thoughts of the writers.
The Knockoff by Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza
The Knockoff is the story of fictional fashion magazine editor, Imogene Tate, who comes back to work after being ill to find that her magazine is going digital without her and her former assistant has been hired to run the show. All of this change, drama, and hilarity is going on during – of all times – the production of the highly anticipated September issue! This book did a really good job of addressing the issues of age, technology, and good old- fashioned kindness and professionalism. It was a really fun read and had great twists and turns. I highly recommend it to all fashionista book worms.
Fashion Week September 2017
Totally missed it! My head has definitely been in the sand on some things! I will play a little bit of catch up and share any greatness I find!
